Og þúsund hjörtu grípur gömul kæti.
Og gömul hjörtu þrá á ný og sakna.
Ó, bernsku vorrar athvarf, Austurstræti,
hve endurminningarnar hjá þér vakna.

Hér lærðist oss að skrópa úr lífsins skóla.
Hér skalf vort hjarta sumarlangt af ást.
Og þó hún entist sjaldan heila sóla,
fann sál vor nýja, þegar önnur brást.

Þá færðust okkar fyrstu ljóð í letur,
því lífið mjög á hjörtu okkar fékk.
Og geri margir menntaskólar betur:
Ég minnist sextán skálda í fjórða bekk.

Og samt var stöðugt yfir okkur kvartað,
og eflaust hefur námið gengið tregt.
Við lögðum aðaláherslu á hjartað,
því okkur þótti hitt of veraldlegt.
